“Faith & Rest”

“Sleep in the Storm” Unspoken

Today’s song is rooted in the gospel account of Jesus sleeping through an intense sea storm while his disciples feared for their lives.  Matthew chapter 8 displays a variety of miracles Jesus performed and some of His teaching.  When we reach verse 23, it feels like break time.  In His humanity Jesus needed rest from His physical labors.  Jesus entered the boat followed by His disciples.  Verse 24 seems so succinct!

“And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep.”

We learn the rest of the story in verses 25-28.

“Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We are perishing!’

But He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?’

Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

So the men marveled, saying, ‘Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?’

The disciples wondered how He could sleep.  Interestingly, Jesus didn’t question why they woke Him, nor did He criticize them for waking Him.  Rather, He reminded them that they didn’t need to fear; they needed to have faith in Him.  In our humanity, we often forget Jesus’ power over nature and all circumstances.  His power provided Him the peace required for sleeping.

During the past six years, I have certainly experienced storms of life that threatened my stability physically and emotionally.  Philippians 4:7 tells us,

“and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,

will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

I cannot count the times that I felt peace when I knew I should have been experiencing gut-wrenching emotion.  Such serenity can only be ascribed to God’s peace that goes beyond what our human minds can comprehend.

The bridge and chorus of today’s song portrays the entire message.

Sorrows will come and go
Even still I know
It is well, it is well with my soul
Oh Lord, Your peace washes over me
You won’t let go
So it is well, it is well with my soul

Let the thunder be my comfort
Let the lightning be my guide
Let the waves that rise around me
Hold me gently through the night

Let the thunder be my comfort
Let the lightning be my guide
Let the waves that rise around me
Hold me gently through the night
For the winds that seem against me
Push me right into Your arms
Teach me how to sleep in the storm
How to sleep in the storm

How to sleep in the storm
Help me sleep, help me rest
Teach me how to sleep in the storm

The God who spoke the universe into existence, died on the cross for my sins, and conquered the grave by rising from the dead is the God who loves me and cares for me.  He gave the peace I needed to weather this storm and say it was well with my soul.  Regardless of what was happening or what emotions I was feeling, I always came back to praying, “Lord, I don’t know why you are doing this, but I know You know.  I know You are in control, and I trust You with my life.”  It was His peace that allowed me to sleep peacefully during the stormy days, weeks, months, and years.  When you or someone you know is struggling to find peace, listen to this song and allow the Lord to send you the peace your soul needs.
